Monday afternoon, the three big kids were playing outside while I worked in the kitchen. Matthew came to the back door and told me Jonah was crying. When I went out there, he was lying on the ground holding his arm. Sometimes wrestling with your siblings doesn’t turn out so well. After bringing him inside and testing his range of motion, we decided on an after dinner trip to the hospital if he was still having trouble moving. A few hours later, we had a sling and some x-ray pictures: a hairline fracture of his left humerus (upper arm).
He’ll be in a sling for 3-5 weeks, depending on how quickly he heals, and he’s already getting frustrated by all of the things he can’t do. Thankfully, he’s right-handed, so it doesn’t affect his eating or writing, but getting dressed, opening the toothpaste, and several other everyday tasks now require mom’s help. And asking for help is hard. He gets this from me. He’s stubborn, and he wants to do it all himself, and it kills him that he can’t. I know this, because I’ve been there. So as I teach him that it’s okay to need other people, I’m also reminding myself.
A couple days ago, I was getting frustrated with my phone. I keep getting the glitch that tells me I have new e-mail when there are no new messages. As I was grumbling and complaining, Hannah turned to me and said, “That’s a bummer.” In the exact same tone I use with her when she’s whining. And she was right to imitate my reaction there, because I was needlessly whining about something silly. My kids are teaching me quite a bit this week…
Interesting Reads from This Week:
A Deeper Reason For Disorganization from Andrea Dekker. I remember learning about Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs in Psych 101 in college, and Andrea does a great job of applying it to organization.
Digital Decluttering: 8 Ways To Manage Your Digital Life from The Humbled Homemaker. I do some sort of digital decluttering fairly regularly, and I’m always surprised by how much “stuff” there is to get rid of in the digital realm as well as real life.
Why Saying You Want Change Is Not Enough from Becoming Minimalist. “We prove what we desire most by our actions, not by our words.”
